The Art of Practicing: Beyond Willpower

Practice is more than a mere application of willpower. It carries deeper meaning and is rich with intention. When we practice, we're not just moving toward our goals—we're engaged in the art of becoming. The true essence lies not in the destination but in the journey of transformation.

The goal is what we might accomplish, but the practice is who we become. It's a subtle yet profound distinction. In honing our practice, we sculpt ourselves into the individuals we aspire to be. This is the art of becoming—a continuous, intentional process of self-creation.

Yesterday, I missed my writing practice. But within this apparent absence, another crucial practice emerged: self-compassion. Willpower alone cannot sustain us, and a lack of self-compassion will ultimately sabotage our efforts. So, when I didn't write, I instead practiced the delicate art of being kind to myself.

I could have fallen into old patterns—berating myself, spiralling into narratives of inadequacy and lack of commitment. Instead, I chose compassion. I recognized my inner critic, that voice ready to attack, and met it with empathy. My excitement over the new office/studio that my husband Scott and I are renovating—with my family arriving next week—had captured my attention and energy.

The beauty of practice isn't in perfect consistency but in our ability to begin again. To approach ourselves with gentleness. To understand that every moment is an opportunity for renewal.

And today, I begin again.
